By 2020, the home health industry will see a 69% growth in additional jobs within the home care field. That’s 1.3 million jobs! The reason for this growth? People are seeing home health care as a need, it’s more affordable, they have a desire to age in place, and simply the convenience of it (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015).
Dr. James Lebolt spends his days helping his patients with upper arm sprains, shoulder pain, and strains. At times, there is no avoiding surgery, but many of his patients could be helped with a well-designed shoulder brace.
Innovation starts with a good idea. However, a good idea alone is no guarantee of viable, marketable product. Depending on the complexity of the product innovation, it takes many experts, time and tenacity to bring an idea to fruition.
On June 29th, Dr. Brent Mulder, Senior Director at Spectrum Health Innovations was featured on Michigan Business Rap radio show for “Entrepreneur Friday” through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Other Michigan hospital systems featured were Beaumont Health, Henry Ford Hospital System, and Genesys Health System.
Spectrum Health Innovations (SHI) believes that collaboration in innovation is key to success. Engaging partners within Spectrum Health and externally accelerates the transformation of ideas. Through collaborative initiatives and making the right connections, several employee ideas have been able to advance.
Everyday nurses use a variety of software and medical devices. Often out of frustration with existing technologies and products not meeting all of their needs, they are forced to improvise or identify work around plans. One might say they are natural innovators. These work-arounds are innovations and often go unrecognized due to lack of time and resources.
Spectrum Health Innovations recently received the Grand Valley State University Distinguished Community Engagement Initiative Award. The award recognizes a sustainable partnership between GVSU students and community members.
Today, schools offer a variety of classes to high school students that help prepare them for a future career. The Kent Intermediate School District (Kent ISD) goes beyond just offering certain classes to students. In one particular class, Kent Innovation High School integrates project based learning into their senior level English course that students are already required to take.

With over 700 job shadows, the possibilities were endless for students and Spectrum Health Innovations (SHI) was delighted to participate!
